On Monday, during the United Nations Security Council's open debate on women, peace and security, the UN passed resolution 1885. Proposed by Vietnam, the resolution asks for the fair, and equal treatment of women when dealing with international conflict, it wants the roles of women in conflict and post-conflict resolution to be expanded, and it also asks the UN Security-General to create a plan for more women to hold positions within the UN. This is the next step in upholding the rights of women in conflict after resolution 1325 (passed in 2000), which has proved very successful in protecting the rights of women in children during times of war.
